Oncology

At AMAH, we specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of dogs and cats suffering from cancer. Because we understand that a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming for both the veterinary patient and their family, our specialist oncology team is committed to provide clear and empathetic guidance, ensuring that our pet owners feel supported and informed at every stage of the therapy.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for our patients by delivering effective treatments while minimizing side effects. We also collaborate closely with referring vet practices to help them supporting their patients and owners with confidence and best care.

Collaborative, multidisciplinary care

Our Oncology team consists of one passionate and dedicated board-certified veterinary oncologist, Dr. Pierre and experienced veterinary oncology nurses. Our Oncology service works hand-in-hand with our Diagnostic Imaging and Surgery services to create individualized and comprehensive treatment plans. This collaborative approach ensures that each patient receives the most appropriate and effective care possible.

Referral oncology services

We welcome referrals and we are happy to consult on a wide range of oncology-related needs, including:

  • Investigations of suspected tumors
  • Clinical staging of cancer
  • Surgical oncology procedure (biopsy, tumor excision)
  • Discussion of treatment options and expected outcomes

Diagnostic tests for pets with cancer

If a cancer is suspected in your animal, our Oncology specialist will offer appropriate diagnostic tests to identify the type, the location, and the extent of the disease. Accurate diagnosis is essential for determining the best treatment plan and predicting prognosis.

These tests may include :

  • Imaging tests
    • X-raysc
    • Ultrasound
    • Advanced imaging with CT or MRI scans
  • Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)
  • Biopsy
  • Cytology and Histopathology
  • DNA tumour sequencing and liquid biopsy

Medical therapies offered

We offer a variety of medical treatments tailored to each patient’s condition and needs:

  • Conventional chemotherapy : Adapted from human oncology, our protocols use lower doses, simplified regimens, and extended intervals to reduce side effects and to allow our patients to maintain comfort and quality of life during treatment.
  • Targeted molecular therapies : Tyrosine kinase inhibitors selectively bind to specific receptors on cancer cells, disrupting their ability to divide and to grow.
  • Immunotherapy : The goal is to stimulate the patient’s immune system to fight against their cancer. We particularly offer the melanoma vaccine in the management of oral malignant melanoma.
  • Metronomic chemotherapy : Administered in small and daily doses at home, this therapy targets the tumor’s ability to grow, effectively slowing down its progression.

Common chemotherapy applications

Our oncology team treats a wide spectrum of cancers using chemotherapy in various situations:

Treatment type Example
Primary therapy Lymphoma and other chemo-sensitive tumors
Adjuvant therapy Post-surgical treatment for hidden metastases (e.g. osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, mammary carcinoma)
Neoadjuvant therapy Pre-surgical tumor reduction (e.g. mast cell tumors)
Palliative therapy Comfort management for advanced or inoperable cancers (e.g. prostatic or urinary bladder cancer)

Compassionate cancer care focused on Quality of Life

At AMAH, we believe that every moment with your pet should be filled with comfort, joy, and dignity. Our approach goes beyond simply extending life and we prioritize your companion’s well-being every step of the way.

Our commitment includes:

  • Maintaining comfort and happiness
  • Managing pain and compassionate care
  • Preserving normal activities when possible

Because your pet’s life isn’t just about time, it’s about how that time feels!
